This last week I was lucky enough to be able to visit the school where my grandad used to go during the 1940s. This is very special for me asI never met my grandad (he passed away the day after he had just turned 29 years old).
The first day I was there, I was assisting at the Art class translating a teacher from California who is currently volunteering at the school doesn’t speak fluent Spanish. It was beautiful to meet the children from the special needs class, kindergarten and first and second grades.
The second day I was with the 3rd grade and I could see a Spanish lesson, a science project they have who is run by students from the University of Puerto Rico and also the violin project they have, run by the Suzuki Association of Puerto Rico, where this children are having group and private lesson of violin weekly. Very beautiful social work serving this community as, suprisingly, they don’t have a music class!
One last very special thing is that the principal asked me if I could do some flamenco dance lessons/workshops next week with the students of all the grades of the school - as a volunteer activity in their afternoon school program! I am happy and excited to contribute in this community and it is somehow difficult to imagine that I will be teaching some flamenco dance lessons in the same school my grandad was many years ago!
